How Social Media is Changing the Game
There have
been apps from the start of the smart phone that has changed the way people go
about their daily lives. There have been apps that have succeeded and apps that
have failed. In today’s day and age apps on smart phones are controlling lives
and really demanding people time and attention. Instagram has blown all the way
up in the past decade. Snapchat is another app that has made major noise in the
past decade. Both of these apps that once started small are running social media
and have taken the social media game by the horns.
In today’s
day and age younger generations are using Instagram more rather than Facebook
which is a little outdated at this point. Forbes stated “It’s been one of the biggest reasons Facebook transformed from a $58 billion-dollar industry to a $435Billion-dollar industry." This is all due to the fact that Facebook bought Instagram
back in 2012. Everyone in today’s world looks to social media from information
such as news, sports, or what is going on in the world. The first thing that I
do every morning is check my social media to see what is going on in the world.
Whether that is snapchat or that is Instagram that’s how I am finding out what
is going on in the world and anything serious that is happening I will be notified.
Instagram and social media platforms
have affected photographers and photojournalist in so many different ways. It gave
everyone a free spot to post pictures and even make a name for themselves.
Nieman Reports had a very similar idea talking about “Demotix” a new
marketplace stating “to create a virtuous circle providing a refuge for free speech,a safe harbor for correspondents, whomever and wherever they might be.” Anyone can create an account and be able to post what they would like to it. People could make a living off Instagram and social media which many people have done. On Snapchat you’re able to keep up with the latest news at your fingertips. In the clip Using Discover on Snapchat it states, “you’ll never stoplearning or laughing.” This is true because everything is personalized to what you want to see and what you want to learn about. It makes watching news very entertaining.
Cameras today keep getting better and better. In “Before there were pixels Part-2” you mention how hard it was back then to look at a picture compared to today when we have these fancy cameras to take pictures with. That is true while cameras are getting better and better people are being able to capture moments that are just changing the way of photojournalism and photojournalist. People make livings off single posts on instagram due to all of their followers. Someone that posts really good pictures will have a good following. And once you have a good following it is really easy to make a living posting pictures. Something that is really cool. This was not a "thing" ten years ago.
